Holiday events and special celebrations make your mountain time even more interesting and exciting. Peanuts characters come to life for Easter and Halloween excursions on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Biltmore displays its "flower carpet" in spring and Candlelight Christmas events in December. July 4th fireworks light up the mountain skies from Lake Lure to Boone after picnics and family activities. Memorial Day Weekend offers fishing tournaments and outdoor fun for the entire family.
Nationally known festivals such as Merlefest and the Wooly Worm Festival draw 1000s of visitors every year.  The Southern Highland Craft Guild offers two annual 4 day craft fairs with 100s of exhibitors, heritage craft demonstrations and good old mountain music.
 
There are year around events held on the same day of each week as well as varying schedules each year. You can listen to the best in local music, see live theatre, attend art walks and show openings, buy produce and handmade goods from tailgate markets or participate in nature programs and hikes.

Event:     Annual Smoky Mountain Folk Festival  
The 48th Annual Smoky Mountain Folk Festival, to be held at Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center, will offer two nights of the finest traditional music and dance of the Southern Appalachian Region. The main shows begin at 6:30 p.m. on the grand stage of Stuart Auditorium overlooking beautiful Lake Junaluska. Both nights will include a rich variety of the region's finest fiddlers, banjo players, string bands, ballad singers, buck dancers, and square dance teams as well as the marvelous sounds of dulcimer, harmonica, jew's harp, bagpipes, spoons, saws, and folk ensembles.

The Qualla Country Trout Tournament   It’s not too late to take home the summer’s biggest trout. And biggest purse. Your $11 entry fee lets you compete for your share of $20,000 in the pristine, freestone streams of Cherokee (excluding the 2.2 miles of catch-and-release waters). For those unfamiliar with tagged tourneys, you’ll discover the waters stocked with fish tagged with different colors. Tagged fish will be specially stocked for this event, and when you catch one, you redeem it for cash prizes ranging from $25 to $5,000 at the Natural Resources Enforcement Office located at 5175 Sequoyah Trail of Hwy 441. Register to anywhere fishing licenses are sold. Fishing will start a one hour before sunrise and end one hour after sunset each day. Open to all ages and for all legal fishing methods. Prize redemption will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

Event:     Mile High Kite and Craft Festival and dance  
Over 50 crafters and artisans will be in showcasing their works of art along with great food, music, kite flying, and fun for the whole family. The Richmond Air Force and Wings Across Carolina Kiting and Okra Society Kiting Clubs will demonstrate flying techniques, and also display their kites. Contests will be held for the best decorated, smallest and largest kites. The first 150 kids will get a free kite for the competition each day, or kites can be purchased at the event or you can bring your own. There will be a kids’ fun zone with games, face painting and a bounce house

Event:     Fontana Trestle Train Ft. BBQ & Brews  
The Barbeque and Brews Dinner Trains feature locally hand-crafted beer from Heinzelmannchen Brewery and Nantahala Brewing Company. plus slow-cooked authentic North Carolina Barbeque. The Cashiers Village Green will be filled with color and creativity for the 6th annual Arts and Crafts Fair. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley. The Arts and Crafts Fair will run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine. The event showcases some of the finest arts and craftspeople in the Southeast, there will be pottery, artworks, furniture, quilts, jewelry, and clothing. The Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley will also run a concessions stand, with its special hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, and drinks on sale. Admission is FREE! Instead of a paid admission, attendees of the arts and crafts fair are asked to consider making a donation to the Cashiers Rotary Club Charities, which support the Club's ongoing efforts to aid and provide assistance for recognized non-profit organizations doing good work in our community.

The show takes place on the green in front of the Historic Banner Elk School, with proceeds from booth rentals going directly to renovation efforts for the 1930s-era school. Considered a "master craft" event the show is geared toward artists who are involved in any medium in the Appalachian tradition of hand crafters. There will be  glass artists, potters, and high-quality jewelry from all types of makers, wood workers of all varieties from furniture to home decor wood items, as well as painters in a variety of mediums – watercolor, acrylic and oil.

Meet some of Grady the Groundhog’s woodland friends or possibly the birds of prey, a Red-tailed hawk and Great Horned Owl. A Park naturalist will explain each animal’s role in our ecosystem, how they came to live at the park and lessons on what we can do to help protect wildlife. Animal Encounters meet at Grady’s Animal Discover Den Mon-Fri and at the Outdoor Classroom Sat & Sun. Afterward, grab a Track Trail brochure at Grady’s Den and take a hike along the Great Woodland Adventure trail with 12 interactive education stations.

Visit the Stroll the tailgate Farmers' Tailgate Market at Sorrells Street Park, while enjoying the live bluegrass melodies of the WNC Bluegrass Jamboree. Meet the heroic farmers and food producers of WNC that put the "A" in Appalachian grown. There will be tastings and planting demonstrations throughout the day. Soak in an afternoon reminiscent of Labor Days past, complete with 5 bluegrass bands, clogging performances, and dance performances at Turner Stage.

held in the beautiful covered, open-air auditorium by the lake at Brevard Music Center. This foot-stomping, banjo-picking celebration of bluegrass and newgrass music will feature Steep Canyon Rangers, Ricky Skaggs, Del McCoury Band, The Milk Carton Kids, Larry Keel Experience, Shannon Whitworth, Red Wine, Sarah Siskind and Sarah Siskind. The event supports the Boys and Girls Club of Transylvania County and has become a premier southeastern festival drawing 5000 music lovers annually.
