Holiday events and special celebrations
make your mountain time even more interesting and
exciting. Peanuts characters come to life for Easter and
Halloween excursions on the Great Smoky Mountain
Railroad. Biltmore displays its "flower carpet" in
spring and Candlelight Christmas events in December.
July 4th fireworks light up the mountain skies from Lake
Lure to Boone after picnics and family activities.
Memorial Day Weekend offers fishing tournaments and
outdoor fun for the entire family. |

Nationally known
festivals such as Merlefest and the Wooly Worm Festival
draw 1000s of visitors every year. The Southern
Highland Craft Guild offers two annual 4 day craft fairs
with 100s of exhibitors, heritage craft demonstrations
and good old mountain music. |

A month+ long arts festival that features events
in music, dance, theatre, visual arts and film on the campus of
Appalachian State University. With award-winning artists from all across

Biltmore Gardens
Railway
Biltmore’s Conservatory will be the site of
Biltmore Gardens Railway, a botanical model train display featuring
small-scale replicas of the estate’s structures. These will include
miniature constructions of Biltmore House, the Lodge Gate, and even a
small version of the Conservatory itself. These handcrafted structures
will be created from natural elements such as leaves, bark and twigs,
much of which has been collected from estate grounds. With 800 feet of
rails and trains traversing six separate lines at different eye levels,
this is a one-of-a-kind, fun-for-all-ages garden experience. Tickets may

Annual Grassy Creek Mineral and Gem Show
This popular event features 60 dealers from all over the world with gem

Hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors will
participate in the Annual Mt. Mitchell Crafts
Fair. The event takes place on the Town Square
and surrounding streets. Handcrafters from all
over the United States come to sell their wares
including baskets, candles, kettle corn,
pottery, stained glass, and so much more. Quilt
squares appear not only on local barns and
buildings but are for sale by some of the best
quilters since Betsy Ross. Handmade clothes,
purses, and vests, are just some of the items
that adorn the beautifully decorated booths.

Night Lights From carnival-style
entertainment to Carolina-inspired festivals, attendees can enjoy the
popular “Saturday Night Lights” event series every Saturday in October
at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). The event includes free
activities like face painting, busker performances, live bands and rides
on a hand-painted Venetian carousel. The events are coupled with a grand
prix show jumping competition held in the George Morris Arena. Buy
carnival treats from vendor carts such as lemonade, popcorn, cotton

Wood Day at the Folk Art Center
An annual celebration of wood crafts including craft demonstrations and
hands-on activities. The 14th Annual Carve Off Competition takes place
between 1 - 3 PM. For the contest, participants have two hours to turn a
simple block of wood into a work of art. Carvers must sign up by 12:30
to participate. Demonstrations include flute making, wood turning, broom

Forester Program
The Junior Forest Ranger (JFR) program is an exciting
way for young people to explore their national forests and grasslands.
The Cradle of Forestry in America heritage site is nestled in the Blue
Ridge mountains and is a great place to enjoy nature education, hiking
trails, and a day of family fun! The JFR program uses Forest Service
science and practices to encourage girls and boys ages 8 to 12 to enjoy
and appreciate nature. Programs run weekly on Thursdays between June 13
and August 8, from 10:30am to 12:00pm. Caregivers are not required to
attend but are always welcome. Pre-Registration is required, and spaces
are limited, please call (828) 877-3130.

Rodeo It’s not too late to take home the summer’s biggest trout.
And biggest purse. Your $11 entry fee lets you compete for your share of
$20,000 in the pristine, freestone streams of Cherokee (excluding the
2.2 miles of catch-and-release waters). For those unfamiliar with tagged
tourneys, you’ll discover the waters stocked with fish tagged with
different colors. Tagged fish will be specially stocked for this event,
and when you catch one, you redeem it for cash prizes ranging from $25
to $5,000 at the Natural Resources Enforcement Office located at 5175
Sequoyah Trail of Hwy 441. Register to anywhere fishing licenses are
sold. Fishing will start a one hour before sunrise and end one hour
after sunset each day. Open to all ages and for all legal fishing
methods. Prize redemption will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
