Holiday events and special celebrations make your mountain time even more interesting and exciting. Peanuts characters come to life for Easter and Halloween excursions on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Biltmore displays its "flower carpet" in spring and Candlelight Christmas events in December. July 4th fireworks light up the mountain skies from Lake Lure to Boone after picnics and family activities. Memorial Day Weekend offers fishing tournaments and outdoor fun for the entire family.
Nationally known festivals such as Merlefest and the Wooly Worm Festival draw 1000s of visitors every year.  The Southern Highland Craft Guild offers two annual 4 day craft fairs with 100s of exhibitors, heritage craft demonstrations and good old mountain music.
 
There are year around events held on the same day of each week as well as varying schedules each year. You can listen to the best in local music, see live theatre, attend art walks and show openings, buy produce and handmade goods from tailgate markets or participate in nature programs and hikes.

Postcards From the Edge  WNC Traveling Exhibit. Eight arts councils in the region will present Postcards from the Edge, a traveling exhibit of postcard-sized artwork created and donated by area artists to raise awareness and funds in support of the mission of the councils involved. The traveling Postcards exhibit will feature approximately eighty postcard-sized paintings framed in elegant black frames. The art will be exhibited in each arts council gallery for at least one month before traveling to the next venue. The artwork is nominally priced with sales revenue being shared by the presenting arts councils and the Western Arts Agencies.

Biltmore Blooms    Biltmore's gardens, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, are alive with color as spring arrives. Held annually at the NC Arboretum this festival is a true celebration of the beauty of orchids. The WNC Orchid Society will host its annual show at The North Carolina Arboretum. Event:     40th Annual Trout Derby   The Derby begins at sunrise with awards at 4:30 PM. No pre-registration necessary. Public waters only, no ponds - nearby fishing spots include Price Lake, Bass Lake, Trout Lake and the Middle Fork River along Highway 321. Licenses and bait can be purchased at Village Hardware on Green Street.. Fishing at Mayview Lake (Broyhill Park) for children 11 and under and persons with disabilities. Naturalist Niche: Spring Migration Hike    Spring is for the birds! Dozens of species migrate through our area every spring as they head north. Join us to find how many different species you can see and hear that are making their way home. Don’t forget your binoculars. A Park bird list can be found here. This hike is considered easy- to- moderate. We love our visitors’ furry friends, but we do understand that some hike participants may consider animals a distraction on the trail. Pets are not allowed on Naturalist Niche hikes because of this. Advance registration is required. Cost includes Park admission for the day.

:  Rosin Sisters   The Rosin Sisters are Barbara Panter-Connah and Jan Smith from Atlanta, and Ann Whitley-Singleton from Dahlonega. These three 'heart sisters' came together as a trio over ten years ago when Ann was still living in the big city, but they have known each other through the traditional music scene for over thirty years. They explore traditional Appalachian, honky tonk, early country, gospel, and Cajun music and perform all around the southeast.   7 PM - FREE admission, but DONATIONS WELCOME.

Make a hat, win a prize, get your face painted, meet the Easter Bunny. This family fun event continues to be a favorite Easter weekend mountain happening. This year the parade will be led by a fleet of restored antique cars and begins in front of the Town Hall on Front Street. Awards will be presented for the Prettiest, Funniest, Largest, Smallest, Most Unusual, Most Easter-like, Best Smelling, Cutest, Most Outrageous, Best In Show and "Poofiest" hats among other unusual categories. There is even a ribbon awarded to the Best Animal in Show! Get times and details online.

Easter Egg Hunt at John C Campbell Folk School   An annual favorite for kids is the Saturday before Easter on March 31. Bring your children at 1 p.m. to hunt for filled Easter eggs. There will be three areas for egg hunting, divided by age: 1-4, 5-8, and 9 & older. This event is free and held at the Open House. We ask that you please park in the gravel lot across from the Keith House to allow plenty of space for egg hunting and for the safety of the participants. 64th Annual Easter Sunrise Service   Celebrate the glory of Easter with song, scripture and spiritual music as a spectacular sunrise ascends over Lake Lure. Chimney Rock’s nondenominational Annual Easter Sunrise Service has become a legendary event in WNC, attracting more than 1,000 early risers from around the Southeast. Gates will open from 5am-6am, so that guests can make their way to the top of the Park. This year’s service will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 7:30 a.m. A breakfast buffet will be offered at the Old Rock Café following the service for $10.99 for adults and $6.99 for children under 10; drinks are not included. Guests who would like to return to the Park after breakfast can show their Old Rock receipt and bulletin at the Ticket Plaza to receive free admission for the day. *Please Note: Due to the large number of guests who attend the service, no one can be admitted through the gate after 6am.

Join NRC for a fun weekend of Clinics and Competition in the discipline of Freestyle. Event:     Annual Three River Fly Fishing Tournament    Held on area rivers in and around Highlands. Proceeds benefit the Town of Highlands Scholarship Fund. Open to men and women of all skill levels. Teams will fish one native, one hatchery supported and one delayed-harvest stream. More than 2,200 miles of public water will be available to fish during the tournament. The registration fee includes the opening night reception, closing night dinner at Cyprus Restaurant and Friday happy hour, as well as a gift bag full of great swag and the opportunity to win fantastic prizes.

In teams of 6 or 12, participants of this epic overnight relay race 212.5 miles along trails and country roads from Brevard, NC to finish here at Nantahala Outdoor Center. Hailed as the most challenging race in the southeast, runners enjoy stunning views from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Mountains to Sea trail.

Greening up the Mountains   This annual spring festival, named for the way the “spring green” creeps up the mountainsides, is a celebration of the local economy, sustainability, and traditional heritage crafts. Three full music stages will feature local bands, children’s performances, and heritage dance, along with the annual Youth Talent Show and more. Storytelling, face painting, an inflatable slide, the recycled materials Superhero Costume Contest, volunteer projects and more. Annual Greening Up the Mountains 5K Run. It also celebrates the greening of the environment, with information about sustainable living and presentations by environmental groups. It is held on on Main and Mill Streets in historic downtown Sylva from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Event:     From Dusk to Dawn 2-Day Photo Workshop  at Chimney Rock State Park.   Join Professional Photographer Chuck Hill for this two-day workshop focusing on nature’s beauty at all hours of the day. This class will discuss and review panos, types of scenic photography and the equipment needed to make a photo pop. You’ll also have time to take photos in the park during regular hours, shoot both sunrise and sunset photos from the top of the Chimney, and learn about astrophotography. As an added bonus, participants can choose to camp overnight in the Park for an additional fee. Lunch on Saturday and Sunday included in Price. All other meals and lodging are at the expense of participants. Workshop attendees are responsible for bringing their own camera, computer with photo editing software, camping equipment and food outside of lunch during this workshop. Event:     Fire on the Mountain Blacksmith Festival   An annual celebration of the art of the blacksmith, held the last Saturday in April in downtown Spruce Pine. The event is a partnership between Spruce Pine Main Street, Penland School of Crafts, and the Toe River Arts Council. Each year, the festival contains a month-long exhibit of new work by artist blacksmiths, a featured Master Blacksmith who demonstrates multiple times at the festival, presents a lecture at Penland School, and conducts a Master Demonstration workshop the Friday before the festival, several invited demonstrators who share their talents at the festival, vendor blacksmiths selling their wares, and demonstrating techniques in their booths, a free hands-on tent, where the public can sign up to try their hands at blacksmithing, assisted by blacksmith volunteers. A variety of food will also be available.

Event:     Oconaluftee Indian Village Opens for the Season   The Oconaluftee Indian Village opens for the season with self guided tours, authentic children's costumes, guided tours, and the Time of War. The Village Re-creates an authentic 18th-century Indian community. Cherokee artisans and guides demonstrate and explain the arts and crafts and the lifestyle and culture of their ancestors. Replicas of Cherokee homes, council house and squareground of the 1750 period. More than just another NC attraction, the Village is Living History. The Village will be open to the public Monday through Saturday until November 9, 2019.
