Holiday events and special celebrations make your mountain time even more interesting and exciting. Peanuts characters come to life for Easter and Halloween excursions on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Biltmore displays its "flower carpet" in spring and Candlelight Christmas events in December. July 4th fireworks light up the mountain skies from Lake Lure to Boone after picnics and family activities. Memorial Day Weekend offers fishing tournaments and outdoor fun for the entire family.
Nationally known festivals such as Merlefest and the Wooly Worm Festival draw 1000s of visitors every year.  The Southern Highland Craft Guild offers two annual 4 day craft fairs with 100s of exhibitors, heritage craft demonstrations and good old mountain music.
 
There are year around events held on the same day of each week as well as varying schedules each year. You can listen to the best in local music, see live theatre, attend art walks and show openings, buy produce and handmade goods from tailgate markets or participate in nature programs and hikes.

Event:    Biltmore Event: Glamour on Board.    The stylish fashions and luxurious travels of the Vanderbilts launch at Biltmore with a stunning new exhibition, Glamour on Board: Fashion from Titanic the Movie. Dazzling costumes from the iconic film—representing the extensive wardrobes required by transatlantic travelers like George and Edith Vanderbilt in the early 1900s—will be displayed in the grand rooms of Biltmore House. This is the first large-scale exhibition of fashions from Titanic, which won a record 11 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Costume Design.  Entry to this exhibition is included in Biltmore admission.   Penland School of Crafts holds its annual Community Open House. Each year, Penland's community open house welcomes hundreds of visitors into the studios for demonstrations and hands-on activities. The event is free and all ages are welcome. Hundreds of adults and children from the local Mitchell County as well as  mountain visitors will engage in free, quality hands-on studio experiences with over 100 artist volunteers.

Activities may include making glass beads, rollerprinting copper bracelets, creating clay sculptures, screenprinting on bandanas, papermaking, forging garden stakes, painting colorful pastepaper, blowing glass cups or paperweights, making photographic “sun prints”, assembling wooden birdhouses, making souvenir books, and more.

Asheville full and Half Marathon on Biltmore Estate   The 2016 Asheville Marathon takes place on the scenic grounds of the Biltmore Estate. It will cover both the east (paved) and west (dirt roads) sides of the Estate. The course will be USATF certified and bib chip timing will be used for the event. Runners will explore 26.2 miles of America’s largest backyard,  winding through a hardwood forest, meadows, gardens and extraordinary views of the Biltmore House and estate.

Event:     KOA Opening Day Trout Fishing Tournament  Some of the finest trout fishing in the eastern United States is located on the Cherokee Indian Reservation adjacent to the Cherokee KOA. Compete with other anglers for thousands of dollars in prizes. Cherokee KOA Trout tournaments are held in March, August and October. Fishing Season is closed in the month of March until the opening day. $3,000 in prizes.

Make a hat, win a prize, get your face painted, meet the Easter Bunny. This family fun event continues to be a favorite Easter weekend mountain happening. This year the parade will be led by a fleet of restored antique cars and begins in front of the Town Hall on Front Street. Awards will be presented for the Prettiest, Funniest, Largest, Smallest, Most Unusual, Most Easter-like, Best Smelling, Cutest, Most Outrageous, Best In Show and "Poofiest" hats among other unusual categories. Event:    Annual Tour De Lure Bike Ride   Two rides  - one  "hard core"  and one for fun. The Dewey Hughes Memorial Ride is a challenging one beginning at Marion's YMCA traveling through rolling farmlands, up Stone Mountain, around Lake Lure, through Chimney Rock and returning to Marion for a total of 71 miles and 5900 feet of ascent. The Fun Ride begins at the same time and place (same fees), but takes you on an exciting 23 mile course through rolling hillsides and farmlands. Applications available online or at theYMCA in Marion. Easter Egg Hunt at John C Campbell Folk School   An annual favorite for kids is the Saturday before Easter on March 31. Bring your children at 1 p.m. to hunt for filled Easter eggs. There will be three areas for egg hunting, divided by age: 1-4, 5-8, and 9 & older. This event is free and held at the Open House. We ask that you please park in the gravel lot across from the Keith House to allow plenty of space for egg hunting and for the safety of the participants. Please arrive early - the hunt begins promptly at 1:00 pm and doesn't last very long!

Event:    Vineyard Deck Music Concert Series: Todd Greene.  South Creek WInery crafts dry, world class Bordeaux Style Wines. Normal business hours are Wednesdays thru Sundays. Tastings include the glass and are $6, $7 or $10 depending on the wines you choose. Music events are rain or shine (if questionable weather, please call to inquire) and provided to South Creek Customers at no admission fee, unless it is a stated ticketed event. The grounds, and all seating at South Creek is exclusive and reserved for customers. Tours are available and are conducted at the wine-makers discretion. Customers may bring picnics, lawn chairs and well behaved pets on a leash are welcome.
