Holiday events and special celebrations make your mountain time even more interesting and exciting. Peanuts characters come to life for Easter and Halloween excursions on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Biltmore displays its "flower carpet" in spring and Candlelight Christmas events in December. July 4th fireworks light up the mountain skies from Lake Lure to Boone after picnics and family activities. Memorial Day Weekend offers fishing tournaments and outdoor fun for the entire family.
Nationally known festivals such as Merlefest and the Wooly Worm Festival draw 1000s of visitors every year.  The Southern Highland Craft Guild offers two annual 4 day craft fairs with 100s of exhibitors, heritage craft demonstrations and good old mountain music.
 
There are year around events held on the same day of each week as well as varying schedules each year. You can listen to the best in local music, see live theatre, attend art walks and show openings, buy produce and handmade goods from tailgate markets or participate in nature programs and hikes.

The maze will be open  each Wednesday and Thursday from 9 AM - 3 PM,  Friday 9 AM - 8 PM, Saturday 10 AM - 8 PM and Sunday 10 AM - 6 PM.  Eliada’s annual corn maze is a 12 acre maze (WNC's largest) with 2 unique trails cut out of a field of corn. Accompanying maps with check points help guide you through 4 miles of maze trails. Also cut into the corn field are two Storybook Trails for children. These trails take you on a fun adventure as you read the stories of Spookley the Square Pumpkin and Ciderella and the Little Glass Sipper! Event:     The Fantastic Fall Color Ramble  at Grandfather Mountain. 
Meet Grandfather Mountain’s naturalists at the Nature Museum to obtain a map and information on where to find the most beautiful fall colors! The walks will be offered daily, Oct. 1 to 12, at 1 p.m. and are included with admission. Since the starting location will vary day to day, those planning to participate should inquire at the park’s entrance gate upon arrival.

   Part carnival, part art exhibit and agriculture show, this annual fair features artwork, traditional Cherokee food, nightly musical entertainment, rides and games, and of course, fireworks. Peanuts Pumpkin Patch Express   The PEANUTS gang return the the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Pumpkin Patch for this annual family fun favorite. The excursions, which are themed after Charles M. Schulz's classic story "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," will be departing from the Bryson City Depot and arriving at the Pumpkin Patch. Event activities include campfire marshmallows, a coloring station, temporary tattoos, trick or treating, bouncy house, hayrides and live musical entertainment. Annual Passholder Fall Sunrise Breakfast      Gate opens at 6:15 AM for 7:30 AM sunrise.  Cost: $6 Annual Passholder; children under 5 are free.  There’s really nothing like watching the sun rise over Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge, so the Park is opening up early just for Annual Passholders who can enjoy a yummy breakfast and hot coffee. Afterwards, guests are welcome to head out on the trails and take some photos of the waterfall or the views from Peregrine’s Point. Advance registration is required. and closes on September 29.

  Bascom Lamar Lunsford  Music Festival   The Lunsford Festival is an all-day festival celebrating regional music and dance traditions. The event is the second oldest folk festival in Western North Carolina and was named in honor of cofounder Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Lunsford was a musician and folklorist who dedicated his life to collecting and promoting the music of the Southern Appalachians. Through his work he became known as the “Minstrel of the Appalachians.” The festival, which is now in its 51st year, brings out the region’s finest musicians and dancers. Numerous performances, open jams, workshops, a ballad swap, and a community dance will occur throughout the day and early evening. Join us in honoring the rich cultural traditions of the Southern Appalachians.

Event:     Brushy Mountain Apple Festival  
This Annual Festival is one of the largest one-day arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast. The streets of downtown North Wilkesboro NC are filled with over 425 arts and crafts, 100 food concessions, 4 different music stages consisting of Blue Grass, Country, Folk, Gospel, and Appalachian Heritage. Cloggers, folk dancers, rope skippers, and square dancers provide additional entertainment venues for festival goers. Appalachian Heritage crafts are highlighted such as woodcarving, chair making, soap making, pottery throwing, and quilting. The Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club owns, operates, and organizes this fundraising event, supporting over 100 civic, church and other non-profit organizations.

Event:     Forest Festival Day and John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsmen’s Meet  More than 80 traditional craftsmen, exhibitors, forestry students, and entertainers gather at the Cradle of Forestry to celebrate forests and forest heritage. Highlights include wood carvers, weavers, a blacksmith, fly fishing, archery, horse drawn wagon rides, and the John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsmen’s Meet, a lumberjack competition, organized by Haywood Community College. For those needing assistance, onsite transportation will be provided by Accents On Ashville. Admission to the Cradle of Forestry for this event is $6.00 for ages 16 and up, $3.00 for youth 4-15 and America the Beautiful and Golden Age pass holders, free for children under four years old.

Art in the Park    THE LAST ART IN THE PARK FOR 2018.
A juried arts and craft show featuring 90 artists held in the picturesque downtown park once a  month from May to October. Some of the best local and regional artists and craftspeople showcase their handcrafted jewelry, pottery, fiber, glass, photography, painting and more. Prices for objects, from a handmade postcard to a large piece of furniture, range from $5 to $5,000.

From carnival-style entertainment to Carolina-inspired festivals, attendees can enjoy the popular “Saturday Night Lights” event series every Saturday in October at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Downtown Asheville's Wall Street will transform into "Little Germany" for the Asheville Downtown Association's 6th Annual Oktoberfest. Internationally-renowned "oompah" band, The Stratton Mountain Boys, returns to the stage with happy yodeling songs, shoe-slapping dances and lively spirited Polka music sure to incite dancing in the street and rousing cheers of "ein Prosit!" The event will feature beer tastings from local breweries including Highland Brewing, Asheville Brewing Company, Pisgah Brewing, Green Man Brewery, Boojum Brewing Company, Noble Cider, Catawba Brewing Company, Craggie Brewing and French Broad Brewing Company. Many brewers are featuring seasonal ales for Oktoberfest, and will be on hand to discuss their beers.  Oktoberfest Games are back as well with some old favorites like the Stein Races and Keg-rolling contests as well as some new ones.

John C Campbell Folk School Fall Festival   Celebrate the rich heritage of Appalachia at the 42nd annual Folk School Fall Festival, featuring over 240 juried and non-juried craftspeople. Handcrafted items for sale include jewelry, woodturning, pottery, weaving, ironwork, photography, rugs, woodcarvings, furniture, paintings, baskets, and much more. Live music and dance on two stages, great food, craft demonstrations, and kids' activities including pony rides are just a few more reasons why the John C. Campbell Folk School Fall Festival is one of the most popular events in the region.

Event:     Boone Heritage Festival  
Celebrate Appalachian heritage with living history demonstrations, "yarn-spinners," music jams (bring your instrument) and old-time music on stage. Hear award-winning musicians and storytellers of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area perform in the cozy setting of the Coffey Cabin porch. Historical interpreters in period clothing will demonstrate 18th century skills such as spinning and weaving, throwing a tomahawk, shooting a flintlock rifle and more. Make-and-Take Crafts include cornhusk crafts, toddler-size scarecrows, "tin" lanterns, jack-o-lanterns and more. Craft vendors offer authentic items such as alpaca wool apparel, turned wooden bowls, handcrafted soaps, candles, jewelry, handblown glass ornaments, crocheted hats and baby items, books, quilts, wooden furniture, leather items, prints and more. Non-profit exhibitors include conservation, farming and education organizations. Snack on fried apple pies, kettle corn, cotton candy, Scotch eggs, hot dogs and more. Admission, music and storytelling are free. A small fee for hands-on craft activities helps cover the cost of materials.

Schulz's classic story "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," will be departing from the Bryson City Depot and arriving at the Pumpkin Patch. Event:     Camping in the Old Style at The Cradle of Forestry  
Turn back the clock and visit  with a small group of re-enactors in a reconstructed campsite of the early 1900’s. Return to the time in history when the Pisgah National Forest was in its infancy, and city folk were discovering the joys of outdoor recreation. It was a time when camping meant sleeping under canvas and cooking over an open fire. Here in the wood smoke, surrounded by the outdoor gear of a by-gone day, the traditional skills of camp and trail will be practiced in their proper setting. Visitors can see fire by flint, steel, and friction, old style campfire cookery, four different styles of period shelters, and traditional camp tools in use.

The Farm is  frightful fun with three main parts: The Woods, The Farm and The Haunted Hayride. Candle Light Ghost Tours  Come out for an evening of tales, mystery and haunts at the Candle Light Ghost Tours. Learn about the ghosts that haunt the old buildings that make up downtown Wilkesboro. Visit a cemetery where Civil War Soldiers are buried, stand in the jail cell Tom Dooley spent his last days, and listen to the stories of the haunted Smithey Hotel. Tickets will be sold on the Courthouse lawn at the museum and at the Wilkesboro Open Air Market the Friday before. Tours start at 8 PM

    Boone Boo!  Ghosts, ghouls and goblins hit the streets of Downtown Boone for the Annual Downtown Boo Boone.  The fun begins at 4:00 PM at the Watauga County Library with crafts and activities for the kids. Activities include games and arts & crafts at the Watauga Co. Library located on Queen St. in Downtown Boone, followed by a Halloween "parade" down to the Jones House Community Center where children can enjoy a silly and spooky tour through the Jones House with tricks and treats around every corner. Trick-or-Treating with the Downtown Boone merchants begins at 5:00 PM and continues until 6 PM. Come out and enjoy a fun, safe, and silly Halloween with your friends in Downtown Boone.

Other events include a dance party extravaganza with returning DJ, Sid the Surf, as well as a Halloween costume contest and dance party held between 4th and 5th street in Downtown Main Street.
