Holiday events and special celebrations make your mountain time even more interesting and exciting. Peanuts characters come to life for Easter and Halloween excursions on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Biltmore displays its "flower carpet" in spring and Candlelight Christmas events in December. July 4th fireworks light up the mountain skies from Lake Lure to Boone after picnics and family activities. Memorial Day Weekend offers fishing tournaments and outdoor fun for the entire family.
Nationally known festivals such as Merlefest and the Wooly Worm Festival draw 1000s of visitors every year.  The Southern Highland Craft Guild offers two annual 4 day craft fairs with 100s of exhibitors, heritage craft demonstrations and good old mountain music.
 
There are year around events held on the same day of each week as well as varying schedules each year. You can listen to the best in local music, see live theatre, attend art walks and show openings, buy produce and handmade goods from tailgate markets or participate in nature programs and hikes.

Event:     Eliada's Annual Corn Maze  
The maze will be open  Tuesday through  Thursday from 9 AM - 3 PM,  Friday 9 AM - 8 PM, Saturday 10 AM - 8 PM and Sunday 10 AM - 6 PM.  Eliada’s annual corn maze is a 12 acre maze (WNC's largest and only nonprofit) with 2 unique trails cut out of a field of corn. Accompanying maps with check points help guide you through 4 miles of maze trails. Old Favorites Return: The giant jumping pillow for children and adults has become a quick favorite after last year’s debut! Enjoy the tractor ride as they drive you around our field and through a portion of the corn maze! Fire away!! Load the corn cannons with an ear of corn, aim, and shoot at one of the giant pumpkin men targets. Corn Cannons run on weekends only. Enjoy the story trail featuring Spookley the Square Pumpkin, this is the perfect size “maze” for the littlest folks in your group. Watch out - the giant tubes slides might just sweep you right off your feet. Do you have a “creepy crawler” of your own? Then the spider web climber is the place for them. This year, Eliada is pleased to offer beer and cider to guests during select weekend hours.

Guests can enjoy 20-minute guided walks that highlight Grandfather Mountain’s fall colors. Peanuts Pumpkin Patch Express   The PEANUTS gang returns the the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Pumpkin Patch for this annual family fun favorite. The excursions, which are themed after Charles M. Schulz's classic story "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," will be departing from the Bryson City Depot and arriving at the Pumpkin Patch. Event activities include campfire marshmallows, a coloring station, temporary tattoos, trick or treating, bouncy house, hayrides and live musical entertainment. American breweries gather to showcase more than 120 different beers. Live entertainment includes a great lineup of national and regional bluegrass musicians  featuring The Travelin' McCourys with special guest Peter Rowan, Jon Stickley Trio, and Bobby Miller and the Virginia Daredevils. The festival will be held on Saturday featuring over 55 breweries sampling a diverse assortment of local, regional, and national craft beers. Annual Passholder Fall Sunrise Breakfast      Gate opens at 6:15 AM for 7:30 AM sunrise.  Cost: $6 Annual Passholder; children under 5 are free.  There’s really nothing like watching the sun rise over Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge, so the Park is opening up early just for Annual Passholders who can enjoy a yummy breakfast and hot coffee. Afterwards, guests are welcome to head out on the trails and take some photos of the waterfall or the views from Peregrine’s Point. Advance registration is required. and closes on September 29.

  Bascom Lamar Lunsford  Music Festival   The Lunsford Festival is an all-day festival celebrating regional music and dance traditions. The event is the second oldest folk festival in Western North Carolina and was named in honor of cofounder Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Lunsford was a musician and folklorist who dedicated his life to collecting and promoting the music of the Southern Appalachians. Through his work he became known as the “Minstrel of the Appalachians.” The festival, which is now in its 51st year, brings out the region’s finest musicians and dancers. Numerous performances, open jams, workshops, a ballad swap, and a community dance will occur throughout the day and early evening. Join us in honoring the rich cultural traditions of the Southern Appalachians.

Event:     Brushy Mountain Apple Festival  
This Annual Festival is one of the largest one-day arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast. The streets of downtown North Wilkesboro NC are filled with over 425 arts and crafts, 100 food concessions, 4 different music stages consisting of Blue Grass, Country, Folk, Gospel, and Appalachian Heritage. Cloggers, folk dancers, rope skippers, and square dancers provide additional entertainment venues for festival goers. Appalachian Heritage crafts are highlighted such as woodcarving, chair making, soap making, pottery throwing, and quilting. The Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club owns, operates, and organizes this fundraising event, supporting over 100 civic, church and other non-profit organizations.

Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsmen’s Meet  More than 80 traditional craftsmen, exhibitors, forestry students, and entertainers gather at the Cradle of Forestry to celebrate forests and forest heritage. Highlights include wood carvers, weavers, a blacksmith, fly fishing, archery, horse drawn wagon rides, and the John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsmen’s Meet, a lumberjack competition, organized by Haywood Community College. For those needing assistance, onsite transportation will be provided by Accents On Ashville. Admission to the Cradle of Forestry for this event is $6.00 for ages 16 and up, $3.00 for youth 4-15 and America the Beautiful and Golden Age pass holders, free for children under four years old.

Event:     Fall Color Sketchbook   at Grandfather Mountain. 
Designed for enthusiasts with little to no artistic training, this foundation course focuses on creating accurate and beautiful botanical illustrations. Participants will learn basic observation and drawing techniques with pen and pencil and will use colored pencils to apply vibrant color. hough designed for beginners, students with more intermediate skills are encouraged to join in, too. This program may involve less than one mile of easy walking. Limited to 12 participants. Registration costs $60 standard or $20 for Bridge Club members. Bridge Club members must present a valid Bridge Club ID with their event ticket/receipt upon arrival, or they will be charged full price.

   Part carnival, part art exhibit and agriculture show, this annual fair features artwork, traditional Cherokee food, nightly musical entertainment, rides and games, and of course, fireworks.
