The Cradle of Forestry
is the birth place of forestry in
America. Our century of conservation dates back to the building of
the Biltmore Estate and the reforestation of abused and farmed
over land. Today the Cradle of Forestry in America is a 6,500 acre
Historic Site within the Pisgah National Forest, set aside by
Congress to commemorate the beginning of forestry conservation in
the United States. The Forest Discovery Center commemorates
conservation history with an 18 minute movie on Vanderbilt,
Pinchot, Schenck and the beginning of forestry in America. Also in
the Center is an interactive exhibit hall, The Giving Tree Gift
Shop and the Forest Bounty Cafe. Outdoor activities include two
guided trails which lead you back in time to seven historical
buildings, a 1915 Climax logging locomotive and the old sawmill.
Thursdays through Sundays you may find a toy maker, a weaver, a
quilter, a wood carver and a basket maker. Pisgah
Ranger District and Pisgah National Forest. |
Dupont State Forest may have
as much "falling water" per square mile as any public
land in the Southeast. The large falls are on the Little River,
but a couple of smaller falls on the Grassy Creek offer variety
and perhaps more solitude. Bridal Veil Falls is perhaps the most
unique falls in the State Forest, with a 4' tall overhanging ledge
on the upper section, and a long, shallow whitewater incline along
the lower section. Access to Bridal Veil requires a longer hike or
ride than other falls. The two largest and most popular waterfalls
are accessed by walking upstream of the popular Hooker Falls
parking lot on Staton Road. Triple Falls is about a 7 minute walk
upstream, though the main trail is quite steep as you approach the
falls. |
Pisgah
Center for Wildlife Education has a theme: "mountain
streams where water and life begin". This
state-of-the-art educational facility is dedicated to exploring the
wonders of North Carolina's wildlife. The wildlife center is a
program of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and
admission is free. The wildlife center's attractions include
aquariums, a 20-minute video, hand-on exhibits along a paved
walkway, garden displays, educational programs, viewing and
feeding of trout, and a gift shop. |
