Cashiers
NC
is located in a green valley 3,500 feet high surrounded by mountains rising up to 5,000
feet. It is not the foothills, but the southern crest of the Blue Ridge
Mountains. For Cashiers NC peaceful is definitely the best description,
though
not to be confused with "boring". Far from the typical
resort shops and crowds, Cashiers is a charming community hosting vibrant festivals, antique shops, crafts, unique and palette
pleasing dining options, art galleries and more. Cashiers NC and
Sapphire
Valley blend almost seamlessly. |
|
|
Like several other mountain cities and counties
Cashiers NC is a "dry town." No alcohol is sold in restaurants or shops. So to enjoy your favorite beverage, bring it with you or purchase it in a nearby city like Highlands or Brevard.
|
|
|
Brevard isn't the only home to "White" squirrels. Cashiers also has
a significant number of the charming
creatures, though not as many as in
Brevard. One of their favorite "hang-outs" is the
Crossroads Chronicle office. |
|
|
|
Cashiers enjoys a lush, green valley thanks to the more
than 80 inches of average rainfall
each year. |
|
|
Downtown
Cashiers NC is
essentially a crossroads, the junction of
U.S. 64 and NC 107, with antique shops,
a few restaurants and stores within a
mile of the crossroads. |
|
|
Cashiers is an unincorporated village located in southern Jackson
County |
|
|
Five properties near Cashiers are listed on the National Register of
Historic Places—Camp Merrie-Woode, the Church of the Good Shepherd, Fairfield
Inn, the High Hampton Inn Historic District, and the Mordecai Zachary
House.

Activities: |
Panthertown Valley
is one of the most spectacular areas in the southeast
with cascading waterfalls, trout streams, panoramic views, sheer granite cliffs, the
headwaters of the Tuckaseegee River and the east fork of Little
Tennessee River. This 6,300 acre backcountry
area in Nantahala National Forest offers
visitors a wide variety of places to explore and
has become a popular destination for hikers,
mountain bikers, equestrians, rock climbers,
anglers, school groups, summer camps, scout
troops, ornithologists, etc. |
The Village Green
- a 12.5 acre park located at the crossroads of Highway 64 and Highway 107 in downtown Cashiers.
The Park provides a venue for a variety
of activities including over 80 special
events for 1000s of visitors each year.
Walking paths, the Joy Garden and nature
programs are permanent assets of the
Green. The Park is also available for
weddings and parties. |
|
Don't miss "The
Shadow of the Bear"
- a naturally
occurring phenomenon from mid
October through early November. The
Shadow is visible for about 30 minutes daily between 5:30 and 6 PM
and can best be viewed from the Rhodes Big View Overlook on U.S. Hwy. 64, approximately 4.5 miles west of Cashiers. The shadow is also visible in late winter from mid
February through early March.

Whitewater
Falls
Upper Whitewater Falls, located in the Nantahala
National Forest near Cashiers North Carolina,
drops over 411 feet
and is the highest falls east of the Rocky Mountains. Lower
Whitewater Falls, located just across the border in South
Carolina, drops another 400 feet. The rugged terrain around
these two waterfalls remains wild and undeveloped. A paved,
wheel-chair accessible walkway leads from the parking lot to the
upper overlook which provides an excellent view of the upper
Whitewater Falls. A lower overlook is located at the bottom
of 154 wooden steps. Because of the difficult terrain
surrounding Whitewater Falls, visitors are urged not venture off
the established trails. |
Gorges State Park
- Plunging waterfalls, rugged river gorges,
sheer rock walls and one of the greatest
concentrations of rare and unique
species in the eastern United States are
found within Gorges State Park. An
elevation that rises 2,000 feet in only
four miles, combined with rainfall in
excess of 80 inches per year, creates a
temperate rain forest and supports a
collection of waterfalls. The
Park's Visitor Center was completed in October
of 2012 and includes the park offices, large exhibit hall, a 75-person auditorium, 40-person classroom, and large covered wrap around decks offering outstanding southern views of the escarpment and park. |
Cashiers
Historical Society - The Mission of
the Cashiers Historical Society is to
foster public appreciation of the
history of
Cashiers Valley and to preserve and protect
the historical and cultural character of the
community through its commitment to the
preservation of the Zachary-Tolbert House and
other historic resources. |

Karen Weihs paints from inspiration found in both of the
Carolinas of scenes that
move her. Her palette
continues to evolve with the richness of green,
violet and orange in which she finds a
counterbalance. Her work is modern paintings
inspired by simplicity. |
