In Banner Elk
North Carolina, "the Balcony of the Blue Ridge",
you can gaze out across mountain ridges stretching almost 100 miles to the
horizon from your cabin or vacation rental. Banner Elk is in Avery County, the northwest mountains of North Carolina, in a
region known as the High Country. Avery encompasses Banner Elk and several small communities
of less than 1,000 year-round residents. With
three major ski resorts in the immediate
area, the county has evolved into a premiere southern destination for
NC skiing,
snowboarding and winter adventures. |

|
The first settlers in Banner Elk
were members of the
Banner Family, originally from
Wales. In 1848 a permanent
settlement was established by the 55
members of the Banner family and the
settlement was named Banner's Elk. In
1911 the town became
incorporated and the name shortened
to Banner Elk. |

The Elk River headwaters begin in the Northwestern slopes
of Peak Mountain and flow west to
Banner Elk and on to Elk Park. Prior to
crossing into Tennessee it flows over
Elk Falls, a locally-known
attraction which is approximately a 40 foot
drop. It then flows down a narrow,
relatively steep valley to the tiny
community of Elk Mills. |
